WELCOME

I thought it was time to start a Blog on the company that I am in the process of creating with my good friend Chelsea Roper...

W.I.S.E - Wilderness Inspired Service Expeditions is a company that focuses on the importance of service leadership skills by performing environmental and community services while exploring the great outdoors.

W.I.S.E is a group created by outdoor guides of many sorts, dedicated to the protection and preservation of the priceless Yukon River wilderness, along with the communities among its shores, and its diverse history it has to offer the world. In order to help raise awareness and provide needed environmental and community assistance to this unique area, our group will be embarking on a service expedition unlike any other.

During the summer of 2010, its members will be rafting the Yukon Passage in Alaska and the Yukon Territory from its headwaters near Whitehorse, Canada to its end in the Bering Sea (2000 miles). Along the way, we will be performing environmental service, focused on identifying and alleviating the shores of the Yukon River from invasive species in order to preserve its natural ecosystem.

We will be working hand in hand with the National Park System in the Yukon Charley National Preserve identifying invasive plant species, while documenting our experience in order to help raise awareness of the threats and needs of the Yukon River and thus inspire further work. We will also be connecting with the local communities along the river to educate and involve them in this cause. Along with educating the communities about us and our environmental goals, we will be performing a variety of services in the communities to help fill any needs they may have. In particular we will be stopping in the small town of Eagle, Alaska to help rebuild their town from the destruction caused by the breakup of the Yukon last spring. While educating the communities on the services we provide we will be teaching/informing them of the importance of the Leave No Trace Ethics and on how they can do their own part. We are also in the process of staring a project for the children in the communities - we are hoping to bring books for the children and hold reading workshops while we are at the communities.

W.I.S.E’s ultimate goal is to create an organization that will provide an annual service expedition similar to this in order to continue the preservation and protection of this priceless resource. Our hopes are to bring these issues to the students of the universities around not only the country but around the world. This year we will be working with a couple of students from Stirling University in Scotland, helping them with their course work in Biology and Natural Resources. Along with Biology, Natural Resources, and History of the area they will be learning hard skills such as: back country/wilderness living, leave no trace ethics, water, and boat handling skills. Along with educating, we will also be promoting our film, photographs, and written experience within the outdoor industry.

Along with the Yukon Expedition we are also in the process of planning other trips in areas that are in need of service.
